Baked Sausage and Pepper Jack Wontons

Baked Sausage and Pepper Jack Wontons

Ingredients

  • ½-pound ground sausage
  • 1 cup Pepper Jack cheese, shredded
  • 24 wonton wrappers
  • ¼ cup green onions, chopped
  • ¼ cup red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten, for sealing wontons
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauce, your choice

Instructions

  • Pre-heat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a medium skillet, over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until fully browned.
  • Remove from the heat; drain excess grease and allow to cool slightly.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, shredded Pepper Jack cheese, chopped green onions, red bell pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper; mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  • Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface and spoon about 1 tablespoon of the sausage mixture into the center.
  • Brush the edges of the wrapper lightly with beaten egg.
  • Bring the corners together and press to seal tightly, forming a little pouch.
  • Place the wrapped wontons on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray.
  • Place in the pre-heated oven and bake for 12 to15 minutes, or until the wontons are golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove from the oven and allow the wontons to cool slightly before serving.
  • Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For a different flavor, substitute the sausage with ground chicken or turkey; add a touch of heat by mixing in chopped jalapeños; toss some finely chopped spinach or mushrooms into the filling.
The wontons also freeze well before baking, making them a great make-ahead appetizer; just bake from frozen for an additional 3 to 5 minutes.
