Homemade Montreal Steak Spice

Ingredients
  

  • 3 tbsp. granulated onion
  • 3 tbsp. black peppercorns
  • 2 tbsp. chili flakes, cayenne pepper flakes or red pepper flakes
  • 3 tbsp. granulated garlic
  • 2 tbsp. smoked or regular paprika
  • 3 tbsp. kosher salt
  • 3 tbsp. mustard seeds
  • 2 tbsp. coriander seeds
  • 3 tbsp. dill seeds

Instructions
 

  • Using a mortar and pestel set, grind each individual ingredient to a coarse consistency (a spice blend, heavy cast iron pan, rolling pin or a meat hammer can also be used to grind the spices); set each spice aside individually; grinding before using ensures a uniform size.
  • In a medium bowl, blend all of the ground spices together well; store in an airtight Mason jar or other airtight container.
  • This spice blend will maintain its freshness for several months.

Notes

Small 4-ounce Mason jars make great host gifts when invited to summer barbecues.
