Mr. Micawber’s Favorite Gin Punch
This recipe is inspired by Charles Dickens' own gin punch recipe, so etiquette requires that you quote while pouring the first cup:“Punch, my dear Copperfield, like time and tide, waits for no man”, David Copperfield, 1850This recipe has been adapted from the original 1850 recipe found in the book Drinking with Dickens by Cedric Dickens, Great-Grandson of Charles Dickens.
Ingredients
- 3 full tea cups of Hendrick’s gin
- 3 full tea cups of Madeira wine
- 3 whole cloves
- Pinch of grated nutmeg
- 1 heaping tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. brown sugar
- 6 large lemon twists
- 1 small slice of orange
- 3 big chunks of fresh pineapple
- 4 large spoons of honey
- Juice of a lemon
- Dash of water
- Ginger bread, optional
Instructions
- Mix all the ingredients in a pot; warm to a simmer; leave to simmer for twenty minutes.
- The punch is known to get better and better as you cook it more and more.
- When you think it is ready, pour in the tea pot and serve hot with ginger bread on the side.
