How to Toast Coconut Flakes
Toasting coconut is a lot like toasting nuts in the sense that it really adds depth and brings out a lovely nuttiness that adds great flavor and texture to whatever recipe in which it is used. Toasted coconut also smells amazing and has an amazing, crisp texture. While untoasted coconut is chewy, toasted coconut is more crispy.
Ingredients
- Sweetened coconut flakes
Instructions
On the Stove:
- Place the required amount of coconut flakes in a large cast iron skillet (if available), over medium-low heat.
- Stir the coconut flakes frequently as they cook.
- Once the coconut flakes are evenly golden, move to a bowl to cool and stop the cooking process.
In the Oven:
- Pre-heat the oven to 325°F.
- Spread the coconut flakes, in a thin layer, onto a baking sheet.
- Place in the pre-heated oven and bake for 5 – 10 minutes; stirring every few minutes to help the flakes toast evenly; do not walk away as they tend to burn very quickly.
- As soon as the coconut flakes are toasted golden brown, remove from the oven and move to a bowl to cool and stop the cooking process.
In the Microwave:
- Start by spreading about ½ cup shredded coconut flakes on a microwave-safe plate.
- Microwave the coconut flakes in 30-second increments, stirring each time.
- Continue cooking and stirring in 30-second increments until the coconut flakes reach the desired level of goldeness desired.
