All-Time Best Overnight French Toast Casserole

Ingredients
  

For the Toast:

  • 1-day-old loaf Challah, Brioche of Frech Bread, cut into 1-inch to 2-inch cubes or slices

For the Custard:

  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. salt

For the Topping:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ½ cup pecans, chopped
  • Confectioners' sugar
  • Maple syrup

Instructions
 

  • Using butter, grease generously a 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish.
  • Placed cubed/sliced bread into the dish.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt.
  • Pour evenly over the bread; gently press down to all bread is submerged.
  • Cover with aluminum foil or plastic wrap, place in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or, ideally, overnight.
  • In the morning, remove the French Toast from the refrigerator; remove the aluminum/plastic wrap.
  • Pre-heat the oven to 350°F.
  • Using a microwave safe dish or saucepan melt the unsalted butter in the microwave or on the stove top.
  • Add the brown sugar and cinnamon; stir to ensure completely combined.
  • Evenly spread this mixture over the top of the French toast.
  • Place in the pre-heated oven and bake, uncovered, for 35-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  • Remove from the oven and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.
  • Prior to serving, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar and pour maple syrup over the top.
